I think, if you're talking about a real war, and one so relatively recent (particularly when another is going on right now), you do have to be careful in setting it realistically (i.e. there realky was a Home Guard during WWII), and in how you manage the focus of the show.
Plus, I don't think that the realism fad in modern sitcoms would lend well to such a subject matter. It'd need to be a knowingly silly audience show. Not enough of them around.
