Yes, but a performance like that can only maintain intrigue for so long, before ultimately becoming irritating.

Agree, and the 'so long' is here already for me.
I heard it was written by two complete newcomers who'd never had anything commissioned before. Hope for all, then.
It was co-written by the drippy main character bird who was previously in Ideal I do believe.
Therefore, written by a performer with previous credits and not a newcomer.
The other writer ( ?? ) may be new, but I bet he didn't come via Writersroom.

The other writer, I believe, is Neil Edmund one of The Consultants. I've met him at a BBC workshop and he was very funny and helpful, even giving me some further feedback on a script.
I actually saw a whole episode of this now and I like the idea and style. I'm just a bit confused by the lead character and couldn't really work her out. She did seem to behave and talk in quite a bizarre way. But maybe I'm missing something.

Two more names to add to your list, Mikey.
It does make more sense that the enigmatic (not drippy) actress wrote it, as I think it would be difficult to write a part like that if you didn't have a definite actress in mind considering it is mainly made up of sighs and wistful looks. It is a very unique sitcom character.
Though, I agree that because it depends on her magnetism there's not really enough there for a classic sitcom character. If somehow there was a joint lead who actually said more than five lines an episode this could work.
Quote: Tim Walker @ September 29 2009, 1:17 AM BSTMy concern is that this series seems to be relying on the one main joke, i.e. where Gaynor - and indeed everyone else in Coventry, including her parents - is in a state of arrested development. OK, so no-one has really (at heart) changed/matured in 12 years? The show may be questioning the philosophy that in life no-one ever really changes, but I'm starting to find it a little tiring.
Don't know if I entirely agree with this. I'm watching it with the (perhaps incorrect) knowledge that Gaynor has gone away, made something of herself 'down south' and been dragged back into the arrested development of 'Cov' -- something she basically foresaw and got out for that very reason. Also the reason she's so reluctant to be back.
This episode was very slow in comparison to the other two and personally I thought the weakest so far. Some good jokes but not enough for a half-hour this week.
The soundtrack is by far the best of any sitcom ever, mind! (Though I put it down to it all coming from my uni years, 12 years ago!)
Dan
I was glad to see/hear Trash by Suede featured so prominently in this week's episode. It wasn't the huge hit it should have been at the time, despite being one of the band's best songs.
Yeeeeah. The story is still (just) interesting me, but there aren't enough laughs by about a hundred-fold. I hope they don't throw the cash for a second series at this.
And why the hell did she still go through with seeing that guy after learning what a slag he was?
There were some funny moments in the episode but not enough for me. Also, Gaynor's fixed facial expression is getting a bit thin.

heh, that list is getting quite big now.
Mind you, I only called her drippy after someone else had previously said that.

So easily led, Mikey? If Mr Carpark told you to write a glowing review of Little Miss Jocelyn would you do that as well? *tuts*
I have limits
I've only seen a bit of this series. I watched last might's episode (missed the first five minutes) and didn't understand a few things. In the earlier episode I saw Mel (the gingery one) had a small child. Is this not her child? In last night's there was a school girl in her house - where did she come from. In the next scene Mel and Gaynor were in a cafe with a group of people - where were they supposed to come from?
As happens so often my interest has haemoraged and I've drifted off, not really caring about the show. I suspect I won't be alone.
