Help with CD/DVD player

The CD / CD-Rom player hasn't worked on my laptop for some time (around the time I installed iTunes) and now the DVD player doesn't work either.

The DVD player is listed under My Computer, but does nothing when I double click it. From the Device Manager I can access the properties and stuff and it states it's working properly. The CD player isn't even listed anymore. I made sure the default setting should automatically run the disc, but it still doesn't work.

I have Windows Vista and there's no manual 'Run Disc' option. The CD/DVD driver is a Matshita (yeah, it really is).

I've also tried the Microsoft Fix It thing with no luck. How expensive/difficult is it to fix this problem?

Thanks.

That's probably the Fix It you did - but try the manual instructions. It happened to me a few months back after f**king around with Nero, and following those sorted me out fine.

I'm assuming, as it's a laptop, that this is one single drive, and you mean that the CD and DVD reading abilities of it have stopped separately, at these different points?

Thanks Aaron, I'll try that.

Yeah they went seperately.

Yes, sounds like a driver rather than a hardware issue then. So should be cheap/free to fix. :)

Do you know if it was just 'around' the time you got iTunes, or actually WHEN you got it? I have a vague recollection of hearing of problems from iTunes in the past.

Yes it's a simple registery issue more than likely, if you have iTunes.

I can't remember the name of the fix but if you Google "itunes cd rom fix" it should direct you to your register where you delete a couple of files and it will then work.

Sounds like exactly the one I posted a link to above, Paul.

Laughing out loud Lovely, Sir, lovely.

Ah, a squirrel. Look at it's tiny paws cradling a conker.

What was the problem again?
