Is it possible to ruin your 'product'? I mean, if you keep sending things out to certain people or prod. comps and the first thing(s) you sent them were shit would they not read further scripts? I purposefully haven't ever sent anything out (yet) because of this paranoid thought that one bad script means you're black listed.
I don't send out a script I don't feel is ready to be read, of course. The more you write, the sooner you know when you've done all you can, and the script is ready for someone else's opinion. I'm in the fortunate position of now having people who know that I can write and want to see new work. This can be a double-edged sword, however, as you can worry just as much about them expecting your latest script to be very good - you worry about disappointing them.
I doubt that anyone has ever sent out a perfect pilot script, instantly ready to be shot and put on screen (perhaps Gervais & Merchant with The Office, if you believe the hype). You have to trust your instincts as to when you've reached the point where you think any more work on the script is more likely to harm it than help it.
