On a similar topic, I read recently that there's a tonne of hard scientific evidence that people are far more interested in the fate of one unfortunate individual than they are with two, three, four, or more unfortunate individuals.
Eg, if you asked people if they care about two poverty-stricken children, fewer people care than if you ask about one child.
