He's definitely not Canadian.

Quote: James Turner @ September 14 2009, 5:01 PM BSTIf you have a strong comedy stomouch then you have to see him at least once because he is really 'out there'. In my opinion Jerry Sadowitz is just as shocking after hearing a few of his jokes recently, the guy is getting more demented as the years go on.
Saw Sadowitz last month at Leicester Square Theatre and he as demented as ever. They also had an advert there for coming attractions and one was for Doug Stanhope in September.
Can't wait
So, who won the BCG competition for his DVD? Are the results ever announced?
If you didn't win I'd really recommend his DVD. It's really very good.
Is it only the winner who's notified? Are the results not posted anywhere on the site?
No, I think only the winner is notified.
Aaron?
Aaron won!? FIX!!!
I've got to say I think Stanhope's great. He does get compared to Bill Hicks, (I saw a video online where someone actually heckled him with that). But it seems most American comedians who pull the angry shtick will inevitably have this happen to them, (Denis Leary's made a career out of imitation in this respect).
But I think Stanhope's genuine enough, (unlike Leary), with something original of his own to say. There's a good video online where he gets verbally assaulted by the crowds at Leeds Festival and he stays on the stage almost out of spite which is hilarious in itself.
Quote: bamalamafizzvaj @ September 8 2009, 6:51 PM BSTWas Doug Stanhope on an episode of Screenwipe? The name rings a bell but I can't be bothered to check.
Newswipe!
I love this guy. He's one of my top 3 favourite comics and in my opinion the closest thing to Hicks yet.

He was actually also on Screenwipe.
Hey, Massive fan of Doug Stanhope - oddly I'm only on here to recommend a book on this thread https://www.comedy.co.uk/forums/thread/23820/2#P855628
I've seen Stanhope a couple of times as was almost married to a yank and lives out there. He is very funny and yes very over the top rude. If you like that sort of stuff but want an English version see the above post about the author Jonny Gibbings. Very similar to that type of gross humour but in a book: Malice in Blunderland is so offensive and funny. Link to his blog: http://jonnygibbings.wordpress.com/
I think there are free bits to his book on Amazon.
But Stanhope - hardly new, but I'd say the best stand up I've ever seen. He did a brilliant bit about a stripper in Japan and comedy hotels. Different to Sadowitz though as he is more self inflicting. My fave from him is the stuff about the girl with two heads and getting oral in the toilet off it - GENIUS! Tat and how women need more vagina's. HE does go over the line, but that's why I like him.
"if one more person compares me to Hicks, I get a claim on half his estate. Hicks was sober, deliberate and opinion based. I don't even have a strong conviction in what I'm saying half the time, if the new world order rang me tommorow and said 'hey, we like your stuff and we need one more guy' I'd be there."
- Doug Stanhope
The new album's on pre-order now

If one more person compares this puerile, mean-spirited moron to the graceful, clever, and funny Hicks I'll shove DS over to the new world order myself
Few things get me all fanboyish, tapping the keyboard like a maniac. But, this is one of those those few things...

"Sicko"
"Die Laughing"
"Deadbeat Hero"
"Something To Take The Edge Off"
"From Across The Street"
"No Refunds"
Are like, 7 or 8 hours of the most insightful, funny and intelligent comedy out there.
Click this link and tell me the guy isn't a legit, decent and honest voice.
"Don't Boo A Girl"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GG0FYAZluvY
The hillbilly crowd had booed his support act because she was Canadian, so he comes on and rips them, drops some truth and says he's Canadian too.
And, this few seconds long quote right here, from the Showtime special, contains more insight than a million Live At The Appollos will ever, EVER, forever-ever, do.
"Nationalism does nothing but teach you how to hate people that you never met. And all of a sudden you take pride in accomplishments you had no part in whatsoever, and you brag about- and the Americans'll go "F**k the French! F**k the French, if we hadn't had saved their ass in two World Wars, they'd be speakin' German right now!" And you go, "Oh, was that us?" Was that me and you, Tommy, we saved the French? Jesus! I know I blacked out a little bit after that fourth shot of Jägermeister last night, but I don't remember... I know we went through the Wendy's drive-thru to get one of them "Freschetta" sandwiches that looked so alluring on the commercial, but then we ordered it and realized we had no money, and we had to ditch out before the second window, and those douchebags in line behind us with the bass music probably got our order and we laughed about that. But I don't remember savin' the French...
...At all! I went through the last ten calls on my cell phone and there's nothin' incoming or outgoing to the French, lookin' for muscle on a project! I checked my pants, there's no mud stains on the knees from where we were garroting Krauts in the trenches at Verdun. I think "we" didn't do anything but watch sports bloopers while we got hammered. I think "we" should shut the f**k up!"
So there's a taster.
If this argument doesn't work. Then, we'll keep going...
Still, we both like Hicks
Purlease, distilling a core question about social and personal identity into distancing yourself from anything actually insightful because you got drunk, amazing. It's like the stories we make up in the pub. Hicks would've brutally told some truths. And been a helluva lot funnier. ( )
