Whatever Works-Distribution query

Only the odd Woody Allen film is ignored by UK distributors but I would of thought his latest film Whatever Works would have no problem getting a showing as it stars Larry David.

However UK distributors have ignored this picture, which has been enjoyed by Larry David fans and got OK reviews from Allen fans, despite Allen's movies doing reasonably well in the last few years (Match Point and Vicky Cristina Barcelona).

Does anyone know much about film distribution, do cinemas ever show films privately without a distributor if they feel there is enough demand (particularly as digital prints have sent costs tumbling)?
