I like avocados too! When I was young, I'd drench them in vinegar and salt and they were really nice. I'm a bit too healthy to do that these days though.
Do you GROW? Page 15

Don't tell me vinegar and salt are unhealthy are they? I make a simple Frog-style salad dressing of olive oil, white wine vinegar, dash of sunflower oil and large spoonful of Dijon mustard, stirred briskly. Pour that into half an avocado's seed cavity and cover in freshly ground salt and pepper. Delicious. Having lived most of my life in the tropics and hot climes, I tend to sweat a lot, so I don't think salt does any harm. In fact, I used to make salt and sugar drinks whenever I suffered stomach problems. As for avocados, I thought they were the world's healthiest fruit (even healthier than goji berries), being full of Vitamin E and (supposedly) able to prevent (reduce the risk of) prostate cancer, stroke, blindness and heart disease. Even if they don't have any health benefits, they're still tastier than any fast food muck.
Quote: DaButt @ June 12 2010, 1:26 PM BSTLittle-known fact: "All Hass avocado trees have been grown from seeds (or were grafted from the cuttings) of a single tree which was grown from a seed purchased in 1926 from A. R. Rideout of Whittier, California."
I was not aware of that. One of my Australian relatives used to have an avocado farm, mostly fuerte and bacon (not hass). I used to love visiting there, leaving with boxes full of avocados. Theseadays I prefer hass. I have heard great things about a new Californian (?) avocado variety called Gwen. I have tried three times to order Gwen plants from nurseries. The first one was in very poor condition when it arrived and soon died. The second two were just regular hass.

Has put me off for life.
Presumably a bad supermarket one. It's a shame that many supermarkets have to buy fruit before it is ripe and then expose it to a particular gas in storage to make it artificially ripen. Avocados should be picked when full-sized and firm, and given one to four weeks to ripen (on a sunny windowsill if you want them to ripen fast, or in a dark cool storage space if you want them to keep for a while). Don't eat them when their flesh is too firm or too mushy. In Southeast Asia, avocados are eaten when still firm. The flesh is sliced into strips and doused in a hot lumpy chili sauce. Not very nice.

Well I can think of something green that's even more awful now. Nice one Robert.

Yep, it was.
Tomatoes still all Green
I've had one or two carrotts, a couple of onions, some lettuce & radish.
My mini Sweetcorn plant is looking very impressive though I must say.
be interesting to see how that turns out.
My toms are still green as well. I have a courgette that's ready and my marrow is about 3 inches long (steady....)
Courgettes are good, mine are getting eaten before they get a chance to grow.
I keep getting Spam emails trying to sell me the worlds only climbing strawberry.
Better than things to grow my gentleman bits I guess.
I'm trying to remember a sitcom where someone planted a gentleman bit & a human tree grew

Worst kung fu movie ever.
Some of my cherry tomatoes are now ripe and ready. Pulled up a carrot, but it was only about 2 inches long.

That's dissapointing, in all circumstances.

One Tomato is going orange/red
One solitary tomato!
What has that one got the others don't... apart from a shorter time to live.
