Comedy Theatre

Hi all.

A while ago, I came on here and was asking a few questions about what people thought of comedy theatre. I had an entry into the heats of the Cardiff-based scriptslam competition.

I'm a firm believer that, as long as there is a definite plot, theatre can be consistently laugh out loud funny and entice a new type of audience along.

Needless to say, the judging panel repeatedly offered comments to the tune of 'of course it's very funny, but...' There was a plot though and the audience enjoyed it. I ended up as runner-up in the final too.

Now, to try to redress this balance, I, along with some colleagues, have formed my own theatre company.

Our first play, a genuinely funny comedy, plays at the Gate Theatre, Cardiff on 18th September, 2009 - 19:30 and a fiver a ticket.

If you can be there then great. Feel free to get involved too - we're going to be running a sketch show (possibly competition) at Christmas so let us know that you're interested in writing for it.

To keep up to date then feel free to join the Inky Quill Productions facebook group, follow InkyQuills on twitter or pm me.

Best of luck with that Rick, theatre rocks comedy wise and we need some good new comedy plays. Watch out for the weevils and creatures of metal on opening night mind!

I don't know much about theatre. Is it a thriving scene or does it struggle to get by?

MOney seems to being allocated elsewhere fast - but it does attract the creative types, and there are few wealthy patrons milling about.

I might be hopelessly incorrect, but the opportunity for new writers do seem to be out there at the moment.

For me, little compares to seing the events unfold before your eyes - and if we can make that comedy, then all the better. NOwt better than a room full of people laughing.

People really liked your script-slam entry Rick, don't take the feedback of the judges personally - it was constructive. If it were me, I would take the 'of course it's funny...' as a compliment. :)

Cheers Stan - I forget you were there.

And absolutely - I can handle criticism and I know why they said it, but I knew I'd achieved what I wanted when they said it was funny. And yep, I agree it was constructive.

But what they said then, and in the heats was that they're not sure if soemthing like that could last a full play - and I reckon it could - hence this company.

If you do come along, lt me know and perhaps we can have a partial Wales-based comedy writers meet-up!
