Rom Com Page 2

Well, yes. :P

I'm not having a go, I just am a bit jaded watching these and coming away very unsatisfied. It's very rare I learn or see something new and exciting. I know they're not really aimed at me. But I like a good story, as much as anyone. But the slew of rubbish British comedy films, makes me quite sad. Most only seem to be hatched around a title. And all of them are as grim as fudge. With the exception of Curtis's fairy tales. Which I'm more in favor of, because I want to some escapism in a movie and be immersed in that world, rather than reminded how depressing and drab England can be.

Anyway, I'd be interested to see what idea you have, if do you have one in mind :)

Ooh, I like that feeling. And then letting it off under the covers with the misses :)

Not in my house. I'd be wearing my balls as earings.

I've had a few ideas for rom com too. Not sure where they are now, but they've all been born out of, I can do better than this!

I think mine's more like, if that what they want, that's what they can have.

Never mind the girlfriend.

What's this formula/template then?

Boy meets girl :P

I always prefer the first part of these films...the setup, the characters and the situation. For one it's realistic, and secondly I suppose I like seeing people who seem more like a 'loser' than me. Then there's the middle bit which is okay, but the endings are always the same and make me wanna switch off. I'd love to see a rom com where at the end the woman says 'Wow, I can't believe you came all the way to the airport, saved my life and proved to me that boyfriend was cheating on me all the time behind my back. But let's just be friends.'

Do you need to be good? Isn't there a very tight formula for writing Rom Com? No matter how well it's masked.

I find them easier than sitcoms because the laugh rate is lower, but there are certain other things different from sitcom writing. The inciting incident should prefferably be within the first 10 mins, which would be almost half way into a sitcom and loads of other stuff too, too much to mention. Would suggest reading up on how to write a screenplay before tackling one. Theres a LOT more to writing a screenplay than you could imagine, as I'm sure MA Dolly could tell you.

A huge advantage though is that you can offer a screenplay to US prod co's where it's virtually impossible to submit a sitcom to the US unless your a team of pro writers.

I couldn't get a single UK prod co to even pick up my screenplay let alone read it, am now in the middle of the third re-write for a US company, hoping one day to sit in the cinema and see NONNY in big letters on the silver screen. Or maybe they are just planning on converting it to a budget porn DVD? :S

I thought The Proposal was very funny and didn't feel too templated. It was written by a guy as many rom coms are and has some great moments in it.

I also saw a preview screening of (500) Days of Summer. This is definitely not templated and was refreshing as well as funny.

I'm starting to outline a few ideas for features and one of them is a sort of Rom Com so I've been looking into these types of films a lot recently.

The trailer really puts me off that film, "A movie that breaks all the rules". Bah, let me decide that! :D
