The Day the Clown Cried

Anyone know anything (or even seen it) about the legendary unseen Day the Clown Cried?

Jerry Lewis plays a clown who upsets the Nazi authorities and is sent to a concentration where he eventually finds himself a job putting a smile on the faces of Jewish children before they are marched off to the gas chambers.

Made in 1970 this film has never been released and has been shrouded in myth and rumour including only one print remains and is locked in Jerry Lewis's cupboard.

Some say it is so pretentiously awful and tasteless that it will never see the light of day. Others rumours it to be embarrassingly bad rather than offensive while stories persist that it is still tied up in legal wrangle over ownership.

Still time has moved on and none of the above stopped that little twerp Roberto Benigni from releasing his butt-clenching vile Life is Beautiful.

Had a look at Wikipedia, and now I'm on a right downer. I've never found clowns funny, and this film – even if it turns out to be well made – isn't one I want to see. Sooo depressing. An interesting idea, perhaps exploring why people would stoop to the depths of depravity and cruelty, but too dark. I'm all for punishing clowns though. Interesting – I had never heard of this film.

This, if it exists, can't possibly be classified as a comedy.

I read the script it is bizarrely horrible and unfunny. Even the none genocide and child killing, supposedly funny bits are just vile.
