It's a little more important for a Windows box. All of my Macs are just upgrades from their original OS - some as much as 5 years old. They still run smoothly.

My biggest gripe about Windows installations is the seemingly endless cycle of Windows Update -> reboot. Hopefully Windows 7 won't require 20 reboots.

That's my point though. I'd prefer a nice clean install to just upgrading. Clears everything out, allows me to start fresh. I keep my machine in perfect working order, it's not stupidly slow and then shit-off-a-shovel fast once I've put on a new OS.
