I always use Gouache paint. Don't even really know what it is, just that I like it, and it's quite cheap.

Not that I'm cynical, but if you play it backwards, it looks like he starts with a photo and systematically covers it up. Look at how the left eye changes at 1.14; played forward, it goes from a being a sketchy circle, to being a finished eye of a different shape, in one fell swoop, but played backwards, it looks like he takes the eye and covers it up.
