A blast from the past

Almost everything my family owned was lost in a fire on Christmas Eve of 1973. A few family photos survived (singed around the edges) but there are almost no photos of me and my brothers when we were young. I've only seen 3 or 4 photos of myself before the age of 10.

My grandmother died in Michigan two weeks ago. After my mother flew up to help her sister with the funeral arrangements they decided to create a photo memorial of their mother. Digging through boxes of old family photos they unearthed a few snapshots of my family and my cousins. Today my mother mailed me copies of them and it was like opening a time capsule. I haven't seen a photo of my youngest brother at that age in almost 40 years.

Judging by ages, hair length and missing teeth, I'd date the top photos to Christmas of 1969. The bottom one is probably the summer of 1969.

My Uncle Mike died in 2004 at age 47. He was a great guy and I miss him a lot. The same goes for my grandparents and uncles who have all died within the past 5 years. I have nothing but aunts and cousins left outside of my immediate family. That makes me sad, but I have a lot of happy memories.

Great pics. Can you remember them being taken?

You can't beat the 70s hair helmet bowl cut. It is a perennial classic.

Lucky you found a few!
I love looking at photos of my childhood so losing them all would be my worst nightmare.

Not really. We were living in Indianapolis and drove up to see the rest of the family in the Detroit area (about 300 miles) every Easter, summer, Thanksgiving and Christmas. My mother thinks there may be other photos from 1966-1972 among my grandmother's belongings, but her sister isn't up to sorting through them yet.

And we had 'em in the sixties! Always ahead of the fashion curve, those Hixsons.

That's terrific. I feel warm inside. What an emotional discovery. Snapshots in time. Memories. Happiness and sadness rolled into one.

I'm sorry about the fire (only 36 years too late). Great pics. Must have been great to see them!

Wow! I'm so pleased that your family has unearthed these photos, because my dad loved to take photos of us when we were younger (no dodgy jokes, please!), and to lose even on of them is unimaginable. We often refer to specific memorable ones and then look at the wholelot, just to find that one, and so I'm glad you're getting almost a second chance at thos reminisces.
