Questions you want to ask BCG members. Page 33
I did it! I did it!
Quote: Stephen Goodlad @ August 11 2013, 4:50 PM BSTI'm a qualified electrical technician, I wonder if anyone wants to ask me a question...
Thanks Stephen, may well come to you next time!
Was that an answer to my question?
Tip: Don't touch the light fitting when changing the bulb in Jennie's house.

Why, will something bad happen?
I thought I was safe once I'd turned on the light on and nothing had exploded...

You're still alive and all that?

Is that a euphemism?

Just about - couple of minor electric shocks, nothing to worry about.

Don't know what you're talking about
Quote: Jennie @ August 11 2013, 3:43 PM BSTI am changing a light fitting.
I have a red wire, a brown/black wire and the yellow/green wire.
Strongly suspect red is live, but Google is contradictory on the subject.
Any ideas?
It should be Brown=live, Blue=Neutral, Yellow+Green = Earth.
The old scheme was Red=Live Black=neutral Green=Earth.
You seem to have a mixture. Is it a Two-Switch circuit, i.e an upstairs switch and a downstairs switch for the same light?
You need one of those neon-light screwdrivers ( or a proper multimeter) so that you can test which is live.

Thanks Bill, I worked it out.
I think mine was an old-fashioned one, and my brown/black wire was just a faded black wire.
It's a single switch circuit.
Might get one of those gadgets though - at one stage I was tempted to flick the wire with my fingernail to see if it was live or not.
Thanks all for your help.

Don't do that! It will HURT and may make your arm move uncontrollably, baning your elbow or some such, or falling off the ladder.
I found this diagram on the internet which shows a lamp fitting with modern wire colours correctly connected to a ceiling rose that has old wiring colours. Notice that the black wire returning from the switch is supposed to have a marker sleeve slipped onto it to indicate that really it is LIVE (when the switch is on) and not neutral. In practice these markers are rarely there. I got told off by a registered electrician once for not putting such a marker on a wire.
Was yours fitted to a ceiling rose or was it some other kind of light fitting?
Have you ever switched a light fitting on with no bulb in and then stuck your finger in?
It hurts
It hurts like a fuxking son of a twat
You only do it the once ...
Quote: billwill @ August 11 2013, 5:20 PM BSTWas yours fitted to a ceiling rose or was it some other kind of light fitting?
Nope, no ceiling rose. I have to remove the entirety of the previous fitting because my new one was bracketed flat to the ceiling.
Managed to get the previous fitting off with a screwdriver, which just revealed a hole in the ceiling with wires. Very straightforward after I'd worked out which wire was which and used that little plastic connector thing.
But there were no markers and the whole thing had a real DIY feel. The guy I bought my flat from fancied himself as a bit of an electrician - I wonder if the whole place is a death trap.
Still, one step closer to being a truly independent woman. At least I can change a light bulb.

Yep, after much consideration, I decided it was ill advised.

Bad pope
I would like to ask zooo whether she still goes and buys stuff from the bakery she used to work in or does she say "Bollocks to your heavy bread" at them.
