Rhoda

As I listed this amongst my Top Ten 10 American sitcoms, I thought I'd have a look to see if this show had its own thread. It doesn't (until now).

For the background to the show...

This was the most successful of The Mary Tyle Moore Show spin-offs, running to over 100 episodes between 1974-1978. I was born in 1973, so obviously don't remember the original airing: though I do remember watching and enjoying it greatly when it was shown in the UK in the 1980s.

It was created/produced by the legendary James L Brooks and co-starred a young Julie Kavner (The Simpsons). I remember it as a smart and sassy show, with some really funny and warm moments.

One of my favourite characters was Carlton, the girls' doorman, who was heard (a wonderfully miserable-sounding guy) but never seen.

Ah yes. Some great comedy - especially from Nancy Walker. Oh - and Ron Silver who died recently - a brilliant 'baddie' in 'Time Cop'

I enjoyed this when it was on, but I was very, very young and don't remember much, except my mum dressed like Rhoda and wore the same headscarves.

Still to remember droll doorman Carlton very vividly. Lorenzo Music, who played Carlton, went on to voice Garfield.

I mastered the Rhoda headscarf while undergoing chemo. I was the talk of all the bald women at my treatment center.

It is a fantastic show. I can remember watching it with my gran when I was little and was very sad to learn that the episodes I was watching were reruns and that no new ones were being made.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show still remains my most favourite American sitcom of all time and Rhoda is my most favourite spinoff.

I recall seeing it when I was very young, and enjoying it lots. Especially Carlton.

I am trying to think who it was who did a pisstake out of the opening credits sequence?

I think you're possibly thinking of Mike Myers doing a piss-take of the opening credits of Laverne & Shirley in the movie 'Wayne's World'. (L&S was a similar premise for a sitcom.) :)

Tina Fey?

That's it - 30 Rock!

Loved this show. I liked the voice of Carlton.

Love this show, absolute 70's classic. Probably my most prized region one DVD.
