http://www.dban.org/download
And download an image of the boot CD. It is free software.
(or if you wish do a floopy disk version)
Burn the image of DBAN onto a CD.
This image is bootable.
When you are absolutely sure you have finished with your laptop boot it using the CD.
You get various options of degree of wipe, but the default option should be OK for you and will give even MI5 or the FBI a really tough time trying to glean anything from your hard disk. It will wipe all disks connected to the computer.
It will take about half an hour.
When finished, destroy or lock away the DBAN cd to avoid anyone using it by accident and totally wiping a computer that you needed.
