Books that disappoint Page 8

Right, let me get this straight, according to BCG Forum members -
William Shakespeare was shit

Just me, apparently. I'm unafraid of being seen as a philistine. There's something about his style that sounds like Klingon to my ears. I wish I could explain it better but I've rarely (though I have on occassion) seen beauty in his words.

I wasn't keen on Bukowski's Factotum, this was after reading his book Post Office, which I loved.

And I.

Thou too'st?

*shudder*

Although he did give us the Reduced Shakespeare Company, so it's not all bad.

And chances are 2 of them are educationally subnormal.

Can I be the other one please? :)

Shakespeare was ace, he's one of the rare writers where to dislike him describes only the doubter not the writer.

I think it was that I acted in some of the plays as a kid. It meant at an early age I got the humour and the drama and the cleverness. He like Dickens and Twain had a real humane style that doesn't date.

I have read a few Shakespeare plays for school/college and I hated most of them, but quite liked Macbeth and King Lear.
I'd rather read Sophocles though. He's ace. And easier to read than Shakespeare even though he's a zillion years older.
(Although of course I realise I'm reading the English translated versions, not the original ancient Greek.) :)

Shakespeare is one of the rare writers where to dislike him describes only the doubter not the writer.

This sounds suspiciously like a Shakespeare quote except it's written in a plainer, more understandable style.

Aha, it's from Macbeth.

DUNCAN
Who is this writer rare? That to dislike him,
As seemeth by his words, describeth the doubter,
The writer not.

:P

What light at yonder window breaks?

It is SlaggA and he can sod off.

And you say you're proud to be British Aaron! Tut, tut.

What does everyone make of Robert Burns? Surely you like his work...

Books that disappoint... are usually ones with good reviews. I always go to watch the films that critics say are crap.

How's that working out for you?

I am. Doesn't mean I have to like a 400 year-old load of toss like Shakespeare.
