But don't try the BBC from within this post. I did and got 4.9 !

Everybody is lying. Don't trust anyone. No seriously, don't.

Best way is to download a file (from a trusted source) and check the speed, I believe. :)

Speed tests vary widely depending on how many routers you go through to get to the server and how many other people are using the bandwidth on the connections you are using etc.

The only really viable figures are those to your nearest speed test server, preferably at your own Internet Service Provider.

Open a black box (DOS box or Command box) and type
tracert <address of speedtestservr>
to see how many hops it takes to get to it.

eg
tracert new.bbc.co.uk

It gives you spots, causes insomnia and can cause nervous tics, so don't go there.

Oh, you don't mean that sort of speed.

Switching from my wireless connection to my son's computer I can't believe how much faster my load time is. That said, I think I'm gonna reclaim this computer and tell the small boy to go outside.

That's generous.

My Dad works for Ofcom. He has, and has always had, BT. Never any problems with the service, nor the support. Quite the opposite. About a year ago they offered a £10pm discount if he took a BT Vision box as well. And they've just sent, at no charge, a second Home Hub - with telephones - because he's had one for a year. I can only remember two occasions, in the past ... I dunno, 6 or 7 years I would guess, where the connection has gone down.

You must remember that companies like BT are always going to get the worst rep as they have the most customers.

And personally, I've also had excellent experience with O2.
