The Beatles weren't quite rubbish. Page 3

I got that link through roneo via docketing. (Can't talk now 'cos he's here)

"I love you too"

On a semi-related note, if I hear one more 17 year old slag off the original Star Wars trilogy, I'm gonna make them feel the Force.

But the special effects are crap! The explosions are rubbish. You old codger.

If it helps to bring the generations closer together, I'll agree that all the Star Wars films were shit. Bad stories, bad acting, awful scripts, awful direction. :)

Grr!! You kids stay out of my garden and stop scrumping my apples or I'll set the dog on ya's!

'Goot, goot. Go get 'em Flash!'

I'm nearly 36! I'm no internet foetus! 'Empire' was good, but otherwise...

Bah!

Can you not see the Beatles / Star Wars comparisons I'm attempting to draw? (You probably can, but I'm in soapbox mode) -

Every single Hollywood film that you've enjoyed over the last 30 years has been directly and indirectly influenced by the original Star Wars trilogy in terms of writing, acting, direction, production, special effects - everything.

It completely re-wrote the book on how films are made, marketed, licensed and distributed. It's cultural influence on the Western world has been nothing short of biblical - (in some cases quite literally with the Jedi census).

It has been voted the greatest film of all time on more occassions then I can remember, created the digital effects revolution and continues to be the standard by which all summer blockbusters must be measured.

It's even referenced in my signature.

Or you could take a comparison to comedy. Music and comedy are both entirely subjective, because you either like it or you don't. Some people laugh at what others find unfunny, so our own personal opinion of it can't be a basis of how highly rated it should be. Same with music. The only things you can objectively talk about is how influential comedy/music was, and how popular. The Beatles were massive in both areas.

I like The Beatles, but I don't own any of their albums, and there are plenty of bands from that period who I prefer; including:

The Who
The Rolling Stones
The Doors
Bob Dylan
The Band

And Star Wars is guff. Loved it when I was a kid, but I watched them more recently and found them to be pretty dull. I'm pretty sick of the endless articles about them in film magazines.

It's just like with the famous quote about democracy - the Beatles aren't perfect. The problem is, noone was and is better.

Now, the Stones, here's a number one overrated band :)

This is like description of Bob Dylan - awful performance all around at all times.
Yet great songwriting and massive impact on generations to come.

The c**ts running the country into the parlous state it's in now were all around during the 60's love-in. The 60's generation were ultimately a bunch of self-obsessed losers who changed very little for good. Some good music and some freely-available grass does not a philosophy or a meaningful political system make. Face it, the 60's lost. Bleating on about how great it was won't change that.

Oo. Come on, I likes me a good bit of political discussion. :)

The 'Beatles weren't very good' argument is always championed by the younger generations who have no inkling whatsover of the kind of innovations they championed in popular music.

Innovation does not equate to quality. The first trains were largely useless as they often ran on tracks too brittle to support their weight. But they were certainly innovative.

Now that is funny.

What is this 'quality' of which you speak, WRT music?

I don't know. But not the Beatles.

Roxy Music. Led Zeppelin. Velvet Underground... all quality, all innovators.

Oh no, no, no. Not getting away with defending 'Star Wars' by attacking Bob Dylan. Sorry. No. :)
