The standard of writing on this website

What do people think of the standard of writing in the critique section?

I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion with regards to what they like/don't like.

However, only in my opinion of course, I read some sketches that I think are really quite poor and below average, but with comments from people saying how great the sketch was. There are people who consistantly post bad stuff. Only 1/2 people have made me laugh more than once at something they have written.

It's easy to spot the people with talent on here. I have only posted one sketch, which was very well received a couple of months back. However, some people might have read that sketch, not liked it, and not commented. You just never know.

Over to you......

Where do you see yourself in all this Jacob?

:D

:D I take your point. I didn't mean it like that though :D

So this thread isn't going to be at all contentious, then? :D

Don't mind me Jacob. I am an equal opportunities sardonicizer.

Oooh! Get you dear! "Jacob Loves Jacob"

Because my first sketch was so well received I am reluctant to post another one just incase it's a shocker.

Why on earth would you call me dear? Please don't.

Okay, love - you call me.

I would say, Mr Jacob, that by it's very nature, critique is a place for writers (And I'd say 99.9% of them are amateur - apart from Mikey J of course) to put up work they're not sure about. Therefore, I wouldn't expect the second coming of Linehan in there.

Laughing out loud

Where's your sketch Jacob? I can't seem to find any threads started by you on Critique.

it is understandable why, but there doesn't appear to be many sketches posted by those who have had their work commisioned. I think saying it is obvious who has talent might be slightly harsh on a lot of the newer writers. From what I have seen of the critique a lot of sketches do have clever lines and good ideas however they are in some ways 'bad' due to rookie errors such as overstating, cliched characters etc...
From my own experience if you have your best stuff criqiued which you know is good then and will be unlikely to be criticised it is basically showing off. THe praise may give you confidence but apart from that it is unlikely to improve your writing.

Personally, I would favour a voluntary code of conduct whereby those of us who don't post our material in Critique don't leave responses to others' work. I know this is unworkable (and what's posted in Critique is "fair game") but other than one or two rare exceptions, I've never read or posted feedback on material in Critique, on the basis that I don't post there myself.

Depends on what your standard of average is.

I really only post my "experimental" or "boredness" sketches on here. I don't really see it as a showcase, more of a place to seek critique (strangely).

I don't really agree with you Tim. From what I've seen the people who have their work critiqued are new writers who could really benefit from the oppinion of the more experienced writers- who are the ones who don't tend to post work up on the critique.
