Quote: Tim Walker @ July 22 2009, 2:16 PM BSTAmerica was most likely named after a Welsh merchant who lived in Bristol, named Americ, who funded Cabot's exploratitive trading missions to the continent. The tradition then was that land was named after the person who paid for the exploration. It wasn't until after the Americ-funded journeys that the word 'America' started appearing on the maps.
His family coat of arms (or somesuch) included red and white horizontal stripes, IIRC.
Quote: roscoff @ July 22 2009, 2:20 PM BSTSo America's really just another Welsh unitary authority then. Good. I always thought so.
Quote: Renegade Carpark @ July 22 2009, 2:12 PM BSTJust to be all Aaron-y for a second , I always thought that our Moon was spelled with a capital 'M' and that other moons were spelt with a small 'm'.
It depends on what you're referring to. There's the moon as a generic object, which is a ... well, a thing orbiting a planet (I can't for the life of me remember the proper names). Then there's our moon, which is just called the Moon. And as that's it's name it's a proper noun and thus capitalised.
Something like that.

A satellite?
That'll do.

I must confess to doing a search on my name. Is that narcissistic or just very sad?

Both.
I'm off to do a search on my name now!
