White Muggers

Just about every film and television show that has a street robbery scene features a white mugger. And not the chavvy, baseball cap wearing 17 year old white mugger, but usually a portly guy in his 30's dressed like one of the Good Fellas (the movie not the pizza).

I'm trying to remember the last time I saw a non-white mugger on film or television in the last 20 years. I'm not saying there aren't white muggers, but the proportional representation in the media seems a bit off.

I haven't seen the latest street crime statistics, so there might have been an outbreak of middle aged, overweight, caucasian muggers in the last six weeks that I'm unaware of.

The question is the ususual one - have the PC Nazis gone mad?

I've never seen any muggers so I couldn't tell you.

As long as they're portrayed as Eastern European white I'm fine with it.

I suppose we quite rarely expect to show the world as it is. I mean the number of features you'd have to change in the Bill to make it realistic.

And it's like the article says a Venn diagram issue. If a mugger is poor and black, it's choice to view only one characteristics.

And it's important to remember that what we're talking about is a larger minority, but a minority none the less.

You've just inspired me to put Jewish muggers in my new show. Just to make it doubley realistic, they need the money to buy drugs, fighting dogs and blinged out Volvo estates.

They could be robbing people to fund their addiction to planting 'Trees Of Rememberance' in the Holy Land?
