I acted professionally and had two plays wot I wrote produced on London Fringe, although I could have played a part in each play, I couldn't do it. In the main and this may sound unbelievable, most actors are shy/introverted and I'm one. On stage, however, it's different because if you're boring the audience to death, it's not your fault, it's the writer's. Also acting out a character is being someone else and so the 'shy/introvert' disappears. I still could not act out my own writing though, I'd have been too nervous and too much of my thoughts would have been on my writing and not the character I was portraying.
Why don't more writers write themselves a part? Page 8

Billie Piper was good in Doctor Who. And I'm probably on my own here, but I liked David Bowie in Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. Also, Sting was good with his bit part in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
Check out 'Everyone Says I love You' for a good reason why we do not need writers writing themselves parts.
It features a 60 something Woody Allen in bed with Julia Roberts and has got her to paw over him and say things like "hey you were fantastic last night."
