Why don't more writers write themselves a part? Page 4

Sir Larry wasn't too good on film.

SlagA - Hopefully you can weed out the actors who have mostly been terrible because their CV will just say Hollyoaks, Hollyoaks In The City, Hollyoaks Follow That Camel and so on.

Or Shopping, The Talented Mr Ripley, Alfie (remake), etc.

:D okay what about Noddy Holder. You can't knock the cuppa soup king's performance.

Or maybe you're just a grouch? :)

Too right it is. I have two elderly parents with serious health problems.

But I like to think I'm allowed to have an opinion!

Yep, those eleven Oscar nominations were a definite sign of mediocrity. I mean, he only won one of them.

Bloody hell Griff are we married or something???? :)

Isn't there a thread on here somewhere about Sir Larry's on screen acting? Didn't Dustin Hoffman say recently he had to tell him how to act in Marathon Man? Oscars are the be all and end all of cinematic talent, eh?

Quote: Griff @ July 4 2009, 10:18 PM BST

It's Olivier who supposedly told Hoffman how to act in Marathon Man - Google "try acting dear boy".

I was just astonished at you picking Olivier as an example of somebody who couldn't act on film. And yes, I would say Oscars are a guide to acting talent - wouldn't you?

Not really. There's many a great actor and performance that's been overlooked by the Academy. I was referring to Hoffman on the JR Show (I think). Sir Larry wasn't good or miscast in Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights for starters. I used Larry as an example of theatre style acting (some might say overacting) not working on film.

PS - Thank for this argument - it's taking my mind off far more important issues!

Of course there are, there's only so many Oscars to go around. Because you didn't get an Oscar doesn't mean you're a bad actor. But the fact you did get one usually means you are a good actor.

How often do they give out Oscars to bad performances? I mean real Jessica-Simpson-in-The Dukes Of Hazzard bad?

Well didn't Circle of Life get one as a song - and it's horrible.

Americans think people like Sir Larry are great just because of the way they talk, etc.

Quote: Griff @ July 4 2009, 10:30 PM BST

That's right. Americans have no idea about acting and only give Oscars to English actors because they talk posh. That's how Liz Hurley got eleven Oscars.

No, the Oscars go to the finest actors in the world. Who were all trained, like ex-models, etc. ;)

It's like when someone says "well, such and such a song got to number one". It doesn't mean it was ever any good.

Quote: Griff @ July 4 2009, 10:40 PM BST

Well, as far as I know, Oscars aren't given out based on who sold the most units, unlike Number One records. But anyway, I've learned tonight that Laurence Olivier can't act, unlike Jo Brand, who can, so that was all pretty interesting.

Goodnight. :)

Ah, and I've learnt that only those who have been 'trained' can act. :D

Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie springs to mind.

I think it was me who expressed in an earlier thread the opinion that Larry was a ham on screen.

On the point about comedians only being able to play characters who are versions of themselves, the same could be said of most movie stars, many of whom have won Oscars. I think there is a distinction to be made 'acting' and 'character acting'.

And I've learned when I make a joke put HUGE emoticons next to them. :$

:D

Where was the joke? :) ;) :O Cool Whistling nnocently :|

Oh Slag, what have you gone and done nowww? :D

In fairness, box office is usually is an important consideration with Academy voters.
