Can the Kindle owners among you please tell me if it has a simple reading light, does the screen light up so you don't have to turn the light on, as I'm a dark room person by nature, hate bright rooms. I've read the guff on Amazon but I can't see a light on it. Or is it like a computer screen at night, it's bright enough to see? It's not very clear on this. Ta in advance.
I don't know, but you can buy little clip on lights for them, so presumably you can't read them in the dark?
There is surprisingly no back light. It is like looking at a real book. The official leather covers are about £50 and feature a light that plug into the kindle on the hinges. But £50 is a bit steep! You can buy battery powered lamps for a few quid. I just use my bed side lamp though.
I am a bit gobsmacked at that, thought I didn't see one in the info. I'll look for those little clip on ones I think. Also surprised screen only comes in grey, I thought you'd have a choice of screen colours. Do you like it Leevil, find it as good as a book or not, or better? Seems to be popular with users on Amazon. It will certainly free up some much needed space for me.
I flipping love it. Emphasis on the flipping!
I'm currently holding 72 books in my left hand with the space for a couple of hundred more (I can't be arsed to do the math but 2,492MB free). In my right hand I hold my MP3 player with 1000+ of hours of music. If you have already transitioned from LP records to digital music files. You'll realize how easy it was or now is. The same goes with the Kindle (or any ebook). But specifically the Kindle. I have the last model, the one with the keyboard. Which helps me arrange my books into categories or find references within a book quickly. It also works well on the BETA web browser feature. I occasionally read articles on it but not very often. Another extra feature is its ability to play MP3 files. It's not a main feature though and is a bit fiddly but still, at least it's there.
As for the screen. Well the print is as good, if not better than paper. The lack of back light prolongs the start of any eyestrain, I suppose that it why it wasn't included (as well as to flog us a £50 lamp). You can adjust the text size (8 different sizes) there's 3 typefaces and you can also adjust the line spacing and screen orientation. The page turns are quick too (0.30 seconds-ish)
It's light, smart and clean looking. Very thin. Battery lasts up to a week or more, depending on how heavily you use it of course and the only time it uses the battery is during a page turn. So the ink remains on the screen but no battery is being used.
Would I recommend it? F**k yes.
EDIT: If forgot to mention. You are given a Kindle email address when you register it at Amazon.co.uk. The awesome thing is that, when you have a book, pdf, html, mobi, epub file on your computer. You can email the file to your Kindle, it will sync and download that file to it.
Here's the one I bought - £79.99 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B002Y27P46/ref=dp_olp_refurbished?ie=UTF8&qid=1319904506&sr=8-3&condition=refurbished
Compared to the new keyboardless one this has a bigger memory, longer battery life and can do audiobooks and £10 cheaper.
Blimus, as Sid James once said, that's a yes then. I'd better get one.
And one last thing, does it do graphic novels on there as well, or are they not available yet? Or if I'm reading a novel which has illustrations, will they show on there too? Ta.
Yeah but only in black and white. Are graphic novels in a particular format? It can read HTML and PDF. There is the "Kindle Fire" to be considered. Not released over here yet but that looks like quite a good lightweight tablet - http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Fire-Amazon-Tablet/dp/B0051VVOB2 Same-ish size as the current ebook Kindles but with the novelty of colour n shizzle. $199 or £130 no doubt it will be £199 though, the bastards.
The only negative with ebooking and the e-age in general is that anyone can release a book - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Boobs-search-cleavage-Facebook-ebook/dp/B004WWQAT2/ref=pd_sim_kinc_5
Mmm maybe not a bad thing after all.
I've had my kindle for 2 days, and I already flipping love it. I do feel like I'm betraying books a bit, and felt very sad yesterday when I went into Waterstones knowing I wouldn't buy anything.
You shouldn't buy books from Waterstones anyway. Terribly overpriced!
It is more expensive (than Amazon) but I like bookshops and don't mind paying a bit more if it helps them to continue to exist.
Or at least I didn't before I got my kindle.
Do you purchase all your books honestly, or have you found...other means of acquiring them?
*cough*
I still love my Sony Reader. Every now and then I get Kindle owners asking me what it is and looking a bit jealous because it's a lot sexier than their plastic bits of rubbish and I don't have to lug that ridiculous keyboard around with me.
I do a lot of commuting and I love having an entire library in my pocket. It's just as easy to read as a real book, thanks to the non-backlit screen. The Sony one is touchscreen so that's handy when books have notes etc. you just tap it to go to the note and again to go back to the text. I don't know how that works on the Kindle.
Currently I have the entire Song of Fire & Ice (Game of Thrones) series, the entire Barsoom series, a complete collection of Lovecraft's horror stories, a complete collection of Robert E. Howard's Conan books, all of Heinlein's novels, the entire Jack Reacher series, all of Raymond Feist's novels, a Bible, the Tripods trilogy, 1984 and Alan Partridge's book on there, taking up about 3% of the space available.
No more having to lug two books around with me because I'm about to finish one.
