British Comedy Guide

Most valuable British comedy writing course

Hello,

What would you say is the most valuable comedy writing course/programme (for television or film fiction) in the UK?

Who has showed to be an excellent teacher for comedy writing?

Thanks, Peter

Thanks for the mention Griff.

One name I never see mentioned here is Paul B. Davies, probably best known of late for his screenplay for the recent movie version of 'Magic Roundabout'. Paul is, in my opinion, one of the great unsung geniuses of British comedy. In the late 70s he ran a pioneering theatre company in Bristol called Crystal Theatre, that was alternative comedy before the phrase was invented. Keith Allen and David Rappaport were among the performers in that group, and many of the technical people involved with Crystal Theatre have gone on to achieve great success with Aardman.

In the 80s Paul moved to London and achieved loads of success as a comedy writer for BBC Radio and TV, as well as three Perrier nominations for his brilliantly inspired one-man shows. I was lucky enough to work with Crystal Theatre, and when I moved to London Paul took me under his wing and helped me get my sketches on the radio.

He's not been too well recently but I'm sure when he's better he'll be running courses again, and you'll learn loads from him - as I did when I started out.
