Oldies I remember but never hear about any more

Sorry if this is the kind of thread that gets created every so often.

I'm in my <cough> 50s now and can recall a number of series from me yout that never seem to get a mention anymore in the media (although they may do in this forum), in fact I'm not sure they ever appeared on video or DVD (probably because they got wiped).

Gone but not forgotten (by me anyway):

The Army Game
Bootsie and Snudge (or was it Smudge?)
Me Mammy
Meet the Wife (if that's the one with Freddie Frinton)
The Arthur Haynes Show
Never Mind the Quality Feel the Width
Get Some In
The Dustbinmen

Did any of these ever make it to video or DVD?

I have fond memories of Get Some In, and yes it did make it to DVD:

Thanks Griff, I'll have to track it down.

All existing episodes of The Army Game are available on DVD.

Meet The Wife was indeed the one with Freddie Frinton (and Thora Hird).

Never Mind The Quality, Feel The Width I've been watching recently and quite enjoying.

The Dustbinmen is also available on DVD.

The first four series of Get Some In! are available too.

The Arthur Haynes Show I've never seen any of, but I think might be getting some soon.

(And yes, it was Snudge.)

Please buy through our links if you can, and keep the site alive. :)

Thanks very much for the information Aaron, I will definitely be buying some DVDs from the site - my Philips DVD player happily does up-conversion of PAL to NTSC.

I was reading a bit about Arthur Haynes a while ago and was intrigued by the fact that in the early 60's he was considered the most popular man on TV. His show was very highly rated and then, within a few years of his death, he was all but forgotten.

I have some radio shows from the BBC Light Programme but that's all I have ever been able to find.

On the question of dimly remembered oldies - was there once a sitcom about garden gnomes... or did I dream that?

The Gnomes Of Dulwich, starring the greats Terry Scott and Hugh Lloyd. All 6 episodes are missing. :(

Thanks! Much appreciated. We'll be relaunching our shop soon so it'll be really easy to search for stuff, but for the moment you can see all upcoming DVD relases and some of the most recent ones on these pages:

Yes, a very fickle world, particularly in light entertainment of the era. There are a handful of stars who faced much the same fate. But in the days before home recordings or commercial media releases, and very few repeats, it's not really all that surprising.

Meet the Wife (if that's the one with Freddie Frinton)

Which is mentioned in John Lennon's song Good Morning, Good Morning on the Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
