Back to Class - Thank You For The Music Page 23

James, the CotterCast theme music sounds familiar, what is it?

I'm another Cotter fan if only for the fact that he's taken this with good grace and humour.

Although I think it would be brilliant if James Cotter was some kind of postmodern, ironic, elaborate comedy creation...unfortunately I think it is just a guy who hasn't been able to let go of his first 'sitcom', that being 'Back To Class'.

I understand that feeling when you write your first sitcom script (and in your case film it as well); you think it is the best thing ever. You have all these ideas for characters and plots and how they would develop over a series; you perhaps start planning things as if this is all a done deal, that for sure this is the sitcom you will get commissioned!

But the truth is, it isn't very good, certainly not up to a standard worthy of broadcast. At this point most people put that script in a drawer and begin work on the next idea; this process continues until you finally write a script that you know is good, you will sense when you have written something that you could put on television.

What it appears James Cotter has done is become obsessed with this one project, and he finds it impossible to let go. As mentioned in this thread, he had all these ideas for where the series would go, at one point he mentioned something that would be revealed in Series 2!! He was speaking as if he already had a full series commission on Back To Class. The 'CotterCasts' and 'Bloopers' are further proof of this; all extraneous elements that added nothing to actual progress but instead helped support his own delusions.

If you are serious about writing James then you should actually start writing; forget Back To Class and move on to something new. Stop speaking to camera as if you are been interviewed by Jonathan Ross about how you made a smash-hit sitcom and actually put some effort in to making a proper smash-hit sitcom.

That's my feeling on the matter.

Ok a lot of what is being said here is rubbish. It's not my first ever sitcom or project as you are making out. At no point ever did I think this, to quote you "is the best thing ever". I never said that or thought that. The over planning stuff and thinking ahead was in hindsight not the cleverest thing but a lot of videos were your are getting quotes from are from over four months ago before the show had even been released, I think we shouldn't be criticised for being excited by our own project.

"But the truth is, it isn't very good, certainly not up to a standard worthy of broadcast". Who said it was? Certainly not me even when we were really exited about the show we never thought it, let alone said it that's why it's called a demo pilot.

I am not obsessed with this project at all. I feel I should give everyone a bit of background history which is, this was not my project it was my now co-writers Dan's. Dan came up with the basic format and had being toying around with some ideas after a while he came to me and said would I mind script editing his project I agreed. We had the odd meeting when I would just be his sounding board for his ideas and eventually I started chipping in with my own ideas with in a week I was now promoted to additional material this went on to co-writer a few days later. In about a two weeks we wrote a basic script and due to deadlines with filming (i.e. locations and crew) we had to film in the next couple of days. I must state at this point I was not going to co-direct or even been in the show there was another actor who was playing another character similar to Mark Rodgers who eventually couldn't do it so I had to step in. I had one day to create the voice, look and personality for my character and in fact 90% of my characters lines we're written the day before and the rest ad-libbed on the day. So in conclusion to this very tedious lecture my involvement came very, very late on and what I did in the short time I personally feel was a achievement.

Even in post I wasn't there all the time for the editing as I was executive producer not producer like Dan so in terms of involvement it was 65-35 to Dan it was only later before we even started this thread that we agreed any other shows we do will be a 50-50 partnership.

I also consider myself a Cotter fan because you are quite a likeable chap and I reckon you should mould this into a character.

Does it really matter if people thought you had a bigger part in back to class than you did, the important thing is you almost definitely came up with the idea of the cottercasts

Hey James, don't get all defensive. People seem to like you for your spunk, so don't ruin that part. Take whatever you like out of posting something in Critique, but you don't have to defend yourself against every single post do you? (Including this one, in case you feel it needs a reply. It doesn't)

I don't mind. I'm just a bit sorry for James Williams and Flat.

What because this the undisputed longest thread in The British Comedy Guides history by a mile.

That may be so, but I heard that Badge has got the undisputed longest COCK in The British Comedy Guide's history by two inches.

I have no plans to mould myself. I'm sorry.
