Someone used the word "Chaver" (pronounced Shaver), when talking about a baby, on an old episode of Rising Damp, the other night. That's where the word "Chav" originates, isn't it?

Aye, I think so. It's romany for 'boy' or child, I think. Or 'chavvi' was. Like most words there are different theories about the etymology, but that's the one which seems most likely to me.

That bald woman in the original Star Trek movie was sexy. :)

I remember people in Reading using the words 'chav' and 'chavess' in the 80s to describe their parents.

As far as I'm aware Chav is pretty recent in terms of common useage. It's only really come to prominence in the last four or five years. I always thought the origins were Gypsy or Romany?

That's probably why people in Reading were using it.

And you're so great!

Thanks for noticing, I wish I could say the same about you.

I'll ignore that comment Stott and spare your life. Just this once mind.

And you Mr Maple should really try to understand British culture so your points have even the slightest bit of weight to them. I wish you all the best with you and yours.

I missed that full frontal scene. Was it a DVD extra or something?

The guy who calls Canadians "fake American" and "Mr. Maple" is lecturing me about knowing something about someones culture before talking?
Can we have Frosty back? He was a gentleman in comparison.

Mr Maple! I thought he was calling somebody Mr Marple, presumably because they were very good at solving whodunnits! Huh?

I once heard that 'chav' originated in Chatham.

In other news, I would look quite ridiculous with a shaved head.

I quite like the bald girl in farscape though and the one in Star Trek.

This one?

Not as ridiculous as me.

I understood Chav stood for -

Council house and violent. Who wants that?
