The Green Green Grass axed! Page 2

There's some interesting stuff coming up this year (I'm particularly looking forward to the new sitcom co-starring Tony Robinson)

Is that the one where he shacks up with a woman forty years his junior... oh, wait a minute, that's his life. Unimpressed

How come Life of Riley was recommissioned and Green Grass not when they had the same viewership bar around 100,000 to 200,000 people. Surely that can't make much of a difference although it obviously did.

The Life Of Riley is presumably the comedy calling-card of Jay Hunt, the new BBC One controller. Everything bar My Family has gone since she took over. Ridiculous woman.

I'm getting tired of Boycie
And the rest of the cast
Want a see a better
Spin-off of a classic
Why don't we run away
And write no-more
I don't want the Green Green Grass
Or a Trigger spin-off
As it never will be Only Fools
I want to see Del-Boy and Rodney
In some classic episodes
Preferably from series 2 and 3.

You do have to remember that things are taking into account:

1. Viewers were 6 million in the first three series, now 4 million. Maybe a sign of declining viewers and the fact the very first episode, even if it was on after EastEnders, got 9 million viewers.

2. The show did a clip show this year after only 29 episodes and the fact that Only Fools And Horses never did any sort of episode like this - and the story of Only Fools And Horses, a doc about the show, came after the 62nd episode.

3. Again the clip show got only 3.46 million viewers even if it did have Only Fools And Horses clips for half of it.

4. A clip show with Only Fools And Horses clips, and a clip show already done at all, looks like they didn't have enough ideas for 9 episodes so they did 8 episodes really.

5. That the BBC commissioned 9 episodes instead of 7 episodes like series 2 and 3, while series 1 got 6 episodes, shows the BBC was hoping for the same 6 million viewers. But 4 million, maybe 2 million viewers, if they did series 5, would not be worth the money, and having the BBC cuts already, it seems unlkely this would happen. Also filming the episodes in summer 2008 and showing them 2009 doesn't show they wanted to shove them out of the way.

6. What's this episode where we will see Del Boy, Rodney and Trigger appearing? I doubt it would have happend even if the show was turning into Last Of The Summer Wine.

7. If they were planning to get Del Boy, Rodney and Trigger appearing, they would have got one of the biggest viewers for The Green Green Grass so they missed a chance there, if they were planning to. I've heard this for 5 years now, but instead they wrote that clip show episode which got 3.46 million viewers watching.

8. If Only Fools And Horses over-stayed its welcome even more they would still get more than double viewers watching than this or Last Of The Summer Wine and even after My Family ended it would still be on.

9. Also how much money does it cost to make the show/episodes?

Not very well edited Aaron.

Shouldn't this thread have been labelled "Green green grass cut".

I've just found this out too. I really liked the comedy but I assumed it was going to come back but Wikpedia has said that a special may follow but this is looking unlikely.

Here's the link to the Wikpedia page...

Cleaned up a bit there, thanks. And very good!

It has to be said, The Green Green Grass was terrible. Incredibly terrible. It wasn't funny and even in the pilot, you could tell Sullivan was struggling. In fact, the pre-credit sequence of the pilot - when we think Boycie's snoring but it's actually Marlene - was awful too, for that matter.

I'm glad it's been cancelled.

And the Trigger, Del Boy and Rodney episode would never have happened. Challis said it would happen in the second series, but it's like blackmailing the BBC. Neither Roger Lloyd Pack, Nicholas Lyndhurst or David Jason would ever be on The Green Green Grass. That's why the cut in footage of Del from the 2002 Fools Special "Strangers On the Shore" and pasted it into The Green Green Grass clip episode and palmed it off as new material. David Jason didn't want to do it, he only does the big production two-hour shows these days like A Touch of Frost - or a couple of years ago - Diamond Geezer. Wonder what happened to that?

I could never get past the supporting characters - the yokels were just too broad and cartoonish. OFAH had a semblance of realism, this was a totally different feel.

But it was still better than Life of Riley?

According to reports in The Mirror, The Green Green Grass was axed in 2009. However, the BBC is yet to confirm this, and in reports it is stated that The Green Green Grass has been 'shelved', not axed, meaning a possible return in the near future

Shelved? Axed? Same thing, isn't it? But "shelved" is merely the more PR friendly way of putting it.

It's not axed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many fans of both Only Fools And Horses and The Green Green Grass itself were disappointed with news that the show had been shelved and are awaiting the news that the show will return. The Green Green Grass' fourth series is currently being re-run on BBC One on Sunday afternoons. Whether, like Only Fools And Horses, the viewership of these repeats will bring about a possible recommission is unknown.

Birds Of a Feather was shelved. But the dust is being blown off the bottle apparently. Will it be a Vintage that has benefitted from being cellared or will it be vinegary?
