well it's been on continually for years on one of the other ones although canned laughter was in some episodes, not all - or had I just got acclimatised to it?

No, there's definitely a series with and without.
When it first came to the UK, on BBC it had no canned laughter at all and two or three of my American friends were thrilled to bits that it was like that as they couldn't stand it with the canned laughter either. - they just recently been assigned posts in the UK, so watched the original series in the U.S.
A few years back Sky showed it with the laughter for some reason, the twats.

I know it neverhad canned laughter here originally. I was stunned when I first heard it.
