Counterfeit characters Page 2

People, especially actors, are mortal, and Hollywood is often accused of being unoriginal and resorting to remakes (I detest the term 'reimagining'). So characters are going to be recast with new actors whether we like it or not.

One for the Dr Who fans. What did you think of the recasting of the first Doctor in 'The Five Doctors?' Was that ok?

Richard Hurdnall was a great replacement for William Hartnell. Though I would have preferred to see the first Doctor in The Five Doctors played by Geoffrey Bayldon. He was the original choice for Doctor Who but turned it down.

There only one Bilko and only one Clouseau, and neither of them are Steve Martin.

I watched Inspector Clouseau (the one with Alan Arkin) yesterday and it's quite good. Better than the Steve Martin thing. And it's got Geoffrey Bayldon and Anthony Ainley in it.

One recast that really upset me as a child was in All Creatures Great and Small, when Carol Drinkwater was replaced by Lynda Bellingham. Not only because it was a different actress, but also because I thought Lynda Bellingham was nowhere near as pretty, tender and sweet-voiced as Carol Drinkwater. Though I saw Lynda Bellingham last year in an episode of New Tricks and wasn't repulsed.

As I see it this isn't a Star Trek re-make and the characters of Kirk, Spock, etc aren't the same as in the TV series and subsequent films, because it is a prequel showing them before they became the characters we know.
