Torchwood is unsuitable for children, which is not quite the same thing as being grown up. Sometimes Dr. Who can be very grown up indeed.
As time's gone on I've found myself preferring so-called 'kids' TV and films to what constitutes as mature, adult entertainment. We love Doctor Who and Harry Potter in our house because they have all the darkness, thrills and humour without feeling the need to make the whole thing mean-spirited and depressing.
It really does seem that film and TV producers think 'adult' has to mean gore, sex and being miserable. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't these factors more appealing to your average 15-year old than adults?
Shows back in the 1960s and 1970s had to be more creative with what they showed and what they were allowed to say and, in my opinion, were all the better for it.
Look at the difference between the original Outer Limits and the 1990s remake. The original, although no patch on The Twilight Zone, was creepy, inventive and well shot. What's more, the whole family could watch it. Skip on 30 years... Tits. The same rubbish about aliens who may or may not be our friends. More tits. Downbeat, predictable twists. Even more tits. They completely missed the point.
I can't help seeing Doctor Who and Torchwood in the same way.
