Inochi is just a typical alien Japanese schoolboy robot. He reminds me of the alien Meathead (Ted) from Meatballs 2.
Inochi means life (or can mean), -kun is a suffix like -san but less formal and more youthful and ikiteiru means alive - so I saw it as a play on words (Samu!). Probably based on a manga about some android who is created and then has to go to junior school. Which sounds great actually so I will search it out.
