I take it it you didn't rate the two coppers in Early Doors.

No I loved Early Doors. Their scenes never seemed like exposition at all. Or padding for that matter.

I agree with Dolly. :O

At last! :)

What was it then?

What was it then?

Well Early Doors is a difficult example because of the naturalistic style and 'mini plot' (according to McKee) of the episodes. I don't ever recall thier dialogue appearing to be forced in to explain things to audience.

What was it then?

Two coppers talking about their day? And expecting freebies while doing it?

Maybe not to that extent but what would you call it?

All story telling is exposition Random. It's how you deal with it that counts.

Why do you have to call it anything? It's just revealing the characters through dialogue.

No it's not.

Two coppers talking about their day

But is that not exposition?

Quote: random @ April 8 2009, 2:33 PM BST

But is that not exposition?

Not really. But I agree with Dolly that Early Doors is a bad example because it's a naturalistic show about the minutae of life.

Yes it is.

I'm not being funny, just wish to understand...

Here's one online dictionary definition of exposition:

*The part of a play that provides the background information needed to understand the characters and the action.*

Is any of this included in the coppers scene in Early Doors, which I've never seen?

What if I have a character whose Dad has recently died and the character is saying that he was a great inspiration to the way she lived her life? Would that be exposition? I get so confused.

So why is it said never to use? ok, maybe not never, but...
