British Comedy Guide

Writing Topical Sketches For The Radio

On Saturday 4 April I shall be running a workshop, in conjunction with BSG, offering advice on how to improve your chances of getting sketches onto '7 on 7'.

PLACES ARE STRICTLY LIMITED, so please PM me now if you are interested in coming. Depending on demand I may try and arrange another workshop, and possibly one outside of London.

The show begins in May and will run for ten weeks, and there'll be another series probably later in the year, so there will be plenty of opportunities for your sketches to be broadcast.

We'll look at what makes a good sketch, write and perform some sketches of our own, and discuss other ways of breaking in to the BBC. And there'll be pages of helpful notes for you to take home after the course.

The course costs £60 plus VAT (£69) and runs from 10am to 4pm at the London Canal Museum (5 mins walk from King's Cross station)

I've written a couple of articles on this site about sketch writing which you can read at https://www.comedy.co.uk/writers/writing_sketches.shtml
and https://www.comedy.co.uk/writers/write_for_tilt.shtml

Are you saying there is still a change of getting my sketches on 7 on 7? I thought that the oppotunity closed?

I think there's still an open door policy. The contest was for the workshop.

I'd guess that the David Mitchell workshop writers will get a bit of mentoring, perhaps have a specific script editor to send material to. But I think they'll still keep it 'open door' and everyone else will send to a generic email address and not get much feedback.

Oh I see! Well, I'd better get prepared to write some sketches then. If I can get on Tilt, I can bloody well get on this!

A contest is by definition a snapshot of what they require at that moment. It's only ever going to be a rough guide to who wrote the best submissions on the day.

'No' is the word all professional writers hear more than any other in this business, all it means is 'Not what you've written today, thank you.'

Dave

Can you let me know if you are doing another one, I cannot do 4th April as I am doing a radio show, I would love to do the course

Sam

Highly reccomended by me and I'll be there (not sure if that's a reccomendation....)

Those of you who have been rejected from 7 On 7 would be wise to attend this... it's not too late to get on the radio!

I would if it wasn't in London. Bloody train prices!

Just a quick note to let you know there a still one or two places left for this course (see start of thread).

If you're interested please contact me by PM.

Thanks
Dave Cohen

Anyone else going to this? Nice to meet some of the faces behind the often-disturbing avatars...
