Me, standing up

I post this with hesitation, cos... well cos it's just me saying silly stuff and you might not like it. But anyway, here's some audio of my latest gig, in Edinburgh. It was the first heat of the Laughing Horse New Act of the Year doo-dah.

Thought, praise, commiserations, death threats all welcome.

Thumbs up. Both of them. The 'I'm not gay. I just say that to......' drew an audible laugh. Couldn't make out the 'petrol station?' line. Although that seemed to yield a good crowd laugh. And. I really liked the Miles Davis joke. Maybe record on something other than your dictofone next time? How long have you been 'standing up'? You seemed very relaxed.

Quality stuff Harris. The opener was strong, as was the flowers joke. The bread story seemed to be floundering towards the end, but the payoff(s) totally saved it. With a couple of tweaks, it could be the strongest piece, I reckon. The Davis bit went right over my head.

Sounded like the audience loved it. Must've felt good.

My first gig was almost exactly two years ago, but I don't do it very regularly. I'd like to, but the cost of travelling to Manchester or Edinburgh to do five minutes for free is quite prohibitive.

I think this most recent gig is my 26th. And it definitely felt good. Mind, I was a bit drinky, which helped (usually I'm driving so I have to do it sober).

The bread bit is the longest-serving bit in the set, and I shortened it for this gig. I like to take my time with stuff, but it's a fine line between stampeding towards the punchline, thereby losing any rhythm, and losing the audience with a more relaxed pace. More practice needed!

If anyone has any ideas for tweaks, do feel free to PM me :)

I really liked this. The petrol station, Christopher Reeve and Michael J Fox gags were my favourites. Not too keen on the bread part though.

Enjoyed this, or what I could hear I did. Especially liked the Miles Davis joke (guess your stage movements made it even funnier) and the sandwich line (leading up to it felt a little slow, though was struggling to hear it all). All sparkly line re: cleaning was also good.

Don't know about the opening, just couldn't hear the punchline.

So well done, audience seemed to love it and your delivery was great :)

Thank you! In the Miles Davis bit I'm pretty much just standing still and looking at different parts of the audience, while in my head I'm thinking "laughlaughpleaselaughthisisfunnypleaselaugh" but I try not to show my desperation....

Hi James,

Finally found a computer I can hear this on.

Very good stuff throughout I thought. You clearly had a rapport with the audience or the silence gag would have bombed. Very brave!
