A lot of supposedly depressing music is actually pretty funny. Case in point, Leonard Cohen and the Tower of Song album.
The Smiths Page 4
True, and certainly the way Morrissey puts it across is pretty funny a lot of the time. He's incredible with lyrics.
I love early Manic Street Preachers, and their lyrics at times (especially on The Holy Bible, one of my favourite albums ever) are not just depressing but downright disturbing.
And when I say some of their songs I don't mean it makes me feel depressed - it's often quite the reverse.
I think "Oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head" might be one of my favourite opening lines. That whole song, I Know It's Over, is utterly utterly brilliant.
I like 'Handsome Devil'. That was one of my first favourite Smiths songs.
"Let me get my hands, on your mammary glands".
Great stuff.

Mine too!
" A boy in the bush, is worth two in the hand
I think I can help you get through your exams "
It's Not Your Birthday Anymore on the new Moz LP is a cracker; I'm enjoying the new one a lot.
"So I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said "Hey, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said "That's nothing, you should hear me play piano""

Not quite as disturbing as when you see the really tall Manic Street Preacher standing next to the really short Manic Street Preacher. No wonder the self-harming Manic Street Preacher f**ked off a killed himself. Or pretended to.
Yes, my fourth favourite band of all time, beaten only by The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Genesis. Morrisey was actually in my Dad's class in Primary School for a year. In the song 'The Headmaster Ritual' where the lyrics are 'Belligilent Gools at Manchester schools, spineless bastards all' he's probably talking about my Dad, as he was treated differently because he wore yellow trousers apparently. He actually wrote to my Dad when they were a few years in secondary school (they went to different secondary school's) inviting him to go and see a concert. As he had a weird reputation Morrrisey, my Dad didn't reply and I think it is one of my Dad's greatest mistakes.
But yes a great band, just a shame they won't never come back together again as they don't really all get on, but great guitar also by Johnny Marr. Hard to pick a favourite, but special mentions go to:
The Queen is Dead
Rubber Ring
What Difference Does it Make
The Boy with the Thorn on his Side
Suffer Little Children
This Charming Man
William It was Really Nothing
How Soon is Now
Shoplifters of the World Reunite
Ask
Yellow trousers?!!! Awesome!
One of the greatest bands of all time and no doubt at all that Morrissey wrote some of the finest lyrics in the history of music.
Also true about The Manics with Holy Bible, I saw them last year at Leeds and they did a few songs from that album.
