Barley was FANTASTIC. I loved it.

You and about two other viewers. Everybody else thought it was a bit shit.

I think its reputation has grown since transmission though. But then, I'm not really going by what other people think, just by my own reaction. I thought it was funny.

Laughing out loud

I liked it. Not so much the first time around but definitely on a second viewing. Can't watch more than one episode in a single sitting though. I think it's biggest shortcoming was skewering a target that too few people are aware of - the permanently solvent, pea-brained Wardour Street trustafarian.

Err. Yeah. Ok.

A lot of people I know said they hated it when it was actually on, which surprised me. But now they all claim they really like it. Which I find odd.

No, I think you can take the piss out of something few people are aware of. It's problem was unlikeable characters. If the Julian Barratt character hated the world he lived in so much, get another f**king job somewhere else.

I'm not sure I was aware exactly of the target, but I could understand what he was getting at. Media twats.

But that was part of the joke, wasn't it - that in his own way he was just as useless as the people he was lampooning?

I didn't hate it, I just had extremely high expectations for it, being a huge fan of its TV Go Home source.

Of course. And a lot of sitcoms are about people trapped in occupations they hate. I just found his uselessness particularly grating. And I couldn't help but think, if he has such contempt for these wankers he works with, why should I want to watch them each week?

'Cos they did funny stuff?

Anyway, it's about time Morris did something new and substantial I think.

Not in any of the episodes I watched.

Agreed.

Well, to you at least. We've already established that some people found the show funny.

That's not a great argument. Some people found Police Accademy 7: Mission to Moscow funny. ;)

They did, so on some level it worked. I can deride it all I like but I can't tell someone who enjoyed it that there weren't any jokes in it. The proof is in the laughter.

The same one that you were in during World War 2.

The Crimea*

However, amidst all the Morris worshipping a name oft-forgotten is that of Mr. Armando Iannucci.

Must disagree with this. Seems to me that Armando Iannucci gets most praise (and rightly so).

Barley was FANTASTIC. I loved it.

It's grown on me a bit recently, but it's quite a niche show, and terribly, terribly obnoxious.

Surprised that people could hate it, or surprised that specific people hated it who you thought would have loved it...?
