British Comedy Guide

Top 10 British sitcoms ever

1. Black Adder
2. Fawlty Towers
3. I'm Alan Partridge
4. Black Books
5. Father Ted
6. Rising Damp
7. Men Behaving Badly
8. The Office
9. Peep Show
10. 15 Storeys High

1 & 2 are undisputed best, in my opinion.

HM's: Steptoe and Son, The Young Ones, Royle Family, Porridge, Red Dwarf, OFAH (grandad years), Grass.

1. Dad's Army
2. Citizen Smith
3. On the Buses
4. Last of the Summer Wine (the early episodes)
5. Till Death us do Part
6. Steptoe & Son
7. Fawlty Towers
8. Two in Clover
9. Porridge
10. One Foot in the Grave.

Interesting list. I like a cluster of the ones you mentioned, but am either not too keen on the rest (hate Summer Wine) of haven't seen a great deal regarding some of them.

Steptoe was great, I'd forgotten about it: on revison it might squeeze into my 10 somewhere, though I would be at odds to leave out anything else. Citizen Smith wasn't bad, never that fond of Dad's Army mind you. Suprised you have Fawlty and Porridge so low and no BlackAdder, but it's all bout the opinions.

Comedy is very subjective and I think every person on this site would produce a different top ten if asked. There is a large number of what I would term 'solid' sitcoms that have been produced over the decades that could all make a play for being termed 'the best' for one reason or another. The difficulty is trying to narrow them down which is extremely difficult. How does a person pick what is best when the shows quality in term of writing, acting and production is all excellent and on a par? I think ultimately the answer comes down to simple personal preference.

Anyway, here is my top 10:-

1. The Young Ones
2. Fawlty Towers
3. Yes Minister / Yes, Prime Minister
4. Bottom
5. Absolutely Fabulous
6. The Office
7. Red Dwarf
8. Are You Being Served?
9. The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin
10. Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em

Def.

1. I'm Alan Partridge
2. Fawlty Towers
3. Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister
4. The Office
5. Spaced
6. Father Ted
7. Porridge
8. Only Fools and Horses
9. Peep Show
10. Steptoe and Son

1. Bottle Boys
2. Oh no, It's Selwyn Froggit
3. On the Buses
4. Home to Roost
5. Bender's Truth
6. Mind Your Language
7. Cowboys
8. Nathan Barley
9. The Piglett Files
10. The Big Hatters

Now that is what I call a controversial list!

Good calls on Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and The Young Ones. I enjoy both.

Regarding the latter I think a comedy that defined its era so much and was always a product of the 'Thatcherite 80s' was always destined to be dated by now. However, I still quite enjoy watching it nonetheless, it should be judged on what it was - which was a breath of fresh air at the time and a great sitcom.

I'm sure you didn't mean it as such, and it's probably just the way I'm reading it, but the above actually seems a little condesending. :(
