I saw series 4 first, and I agree that seems to have been its absolute peak. I do like the first series, however. It does have a very different feel. I have to say that the theme tune for the first 2 series is horrible. It's got that terrible crappity ending that was so popular back then. It's like someone said, "Hey, I've got a shitty idea. Let's make the the theme tune as generic as possible. What do you say?" And some bozo said, "Yes, that sounds great." I actually had to fast forward through the opening sequence on all of series 1 and 2 because it annoys me to the point of feeling like my ears will bleed. I'm undecided on the end credits, but I do know that it certainly wasn't the best bad dancing of the series.
Men Behaving Badly - Series 1 Page 2
Mmmmm. Didn't like Harry Enfield. Still don't.
I recently watched series 1 for the first time and thought it was pretty good. Harry Enfield isn't the best sitcom actor in the world, but I think he does a decent enough job for his debut (I assume it was his sitcom debut). I think the problem with the Dermot character is that's he's a bit too similar in personality to Gary. Tony seemed more different - bar the women and booze - so I think that's why they were a better combination.
I also watched series 1 for the first time recently and...
... I agree with everything Ben has said above.
It was a very different show back in Series 1. I believe it was pre-watershed and the more gentle humour reflected the scheduling.
Series 3 onwards was a lot better because Simon Nye could write ruder, edgier stuff that made the show into a classic.
I thought it was OK, nothing special though. It took off when Neil Morrissey joined.
Haven't seen series 1 in ages though. The later ones are repeated almost daily on GOLD and Dave. Even though I've seen them all before they still bring the laughs, dipping near the end as someone else said.
I loved Series 1 and have watched it the most. It really should have stopped after 4 series though. Beyond Series 4 it got tired and super patchy in places. The episode called Hair at the start of Series 5 is when Simon Nye turned Tony into a complete idiot and just ruined it for me.
Series 1 took a while to grow on me, but over the years I have come to really appreciate the hilarity of the dynamic between Gary and Dermot.
Nowhere near the standards of the later series, but still very funny and highly underrated. I think the fact it's hardly repeated, or was hardly repeated on the BBC in the 1990s didn't do it any favours.
Wasn't Series one on ITV?
Yes, with Harry Enfield instead of Neil Morrisey
In MBB's Comedy Connections episode, Beryl Vertue mentions that Harry Enfield only ever intended to do one series:
Bought the mega box-set off eBay S/H for only £4 and in very good condition (discs/box) [Bargain!] and am finding the first series with Enfield funnier second time round, but the star for me is Clunes - he is so funny and plays his part so well.
The more I watch the first series the more I loath it!
Bloody atrocious!

Rubbish! How on earth can you say it is "Bloody atrocious" - you suffering from a hangover or summat?
Well the head of ITV comedy obviously agreed with me which is why they dumped it!😋
Enfield was one of t he biggest comedians in the U.K. at that time and they got him to portray one of the most dreary, tedious characters I've ever seen - what a scandalous waste
The 'Tony' character that replaced him in series 2 was 1000 times funnier
Not Enfields fault - the scripts and plots were dire
