Writing for Newsjack (aka 7 on 7) Page 92

That's crazy that the BBC can't accept scripts in BBC ScriptSmart! It's a real pain in the arse trying to format without a template. I've sent out ScriptSmart docs to different people all the time and no one has had a problem opening or editing them. The only thing I've been asked to re-send was some .docx files.

I've had problems with scripts written in ScriptSmart that my writing partner has sent me, I can read them fine but I can't always edit them, so we don't use it anymore. I think your success with ScriptSmart documents very much depends what version/brand of operating system you have and what version of Word/Office you are running and possibly on some of your settings as well.

Also ScriptSmart hasn't been maintained for a few years, and won't ever be updated in the future - it's an old product now - so it's only going to get less compatible with everyone's computers as time goes on. I think it was only ever a WritersRoom initiative, I don't believe it's been used much by the radio department.

As Dan says, it's straightforward enough to hit TAB and RETURN a couple of times as you write. Or (which I prefer) just write the sketch any old how and then spend a couple of minutes formatting it once it's finished. I often spot things that need fixing during this reformatting bit.

I never use any template anyway, even on longer scripts, I'm used to just spacing it all out as I type. I'd probably find it quite weird to use some sort of template now.

Yeah, I don't really do proper satire. Even though I wrote for Newsrevue for a year, it's not my cup of tea at all.

I think I remember it as well.
Was it Gordon Brown is not famous for saying Who Da Boss, I'm da boss
But is in fact famous for saying What's that Cheeseface?

Or something like that anyway

Yeah, pretty inspired, huh? :D I'm surprised Rory Bremner's people haven't been on the phone.

There is a writer at Newsrevue who had exactly that happen to him. He was at his day job one day, the phone rang, and a voice said "Hello it's Rory Bremner here we'd like to use your sketch". (The contact wasn't made because the sketch had been in NR, he'd sent it in to the Bremner show on spec). Cool or what? Unfortunately I believe that was the only sketch they ever took from him.

Obviously Bremner is just taking his time to get round to me then. :D *Sits by phone*

It was a funny line, and did get a good laugh.
At the time I didn't think that Miles Jupp had quite delivered the last line properly.
But I'm not sure where the emphasis was supposed to be, so it may well have been spot on.

Hooray! One less writer I have to compete with for series 2

Tickets for the second series are now available. The series begins on 7th January.

Morning all I'm looking to submit some material to Newsjack for the first time any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated. I listened to the repeat show yesterday from the first series and really enjoyed it. I know they want as up to date material as possible so just wondering how much in advance do you start writing?

I think if the sketch is really funny it doesn't necessarily matter so much whether the story happened one day ago or four. We're never going to be able to be as up-to-date as the commissioned writers.

So hello again one and all. The madness starts once more.

Hmm, submitted a sketch (haven't got computer access tomorrow/Monday) but got a "we've finished for this series auto-email". They need to update their out of office...

Same thing happened to me Elise - Last series, this sort of thing got everybody in a right tizz, but I don't think it will matter.

I'll just send my sketch again eighteen times just to make sure ;)
