Goalkeeping Competition

Two major goalkeeper moves happened in the Premiership this transfer window:
Carlo Cudicini: Chelsea-Tottenham
Shay Given: Newcastle-Manchester City

Now here are two major goalkeepers going to teams where the first choice goal-keeper was firmly established. So who do you think should be first choice at:
Tottenham: Gomes or Cudicini
Manchester City: Given or Hart.

I think at Tottenham Gomes should be number one. Despite a shocking start, he's really settled down and produced some top class performances.
At Manchester City I think Given should take the number one spot. A great goalkeeper and better than Hart, but in fairness though Hart has done very well and deserves to be dropped.

What do you think?

Cudicini was amazing a few years ago. Be interesting to see how much he's reflexes have dulled after 4 years of being on the bench.

I'd say CC for Spurs, and Given (who's a brilliant keeper) for City.

Given for sure at City, but at Spurs its tough. I think Gomes might win that one.

Didn't mean that, did you?

Given, yes. With Spurs I think Harry's quite likely to bring back Pat Jennings.

Completely agree with you Jack. Gomes, now he seems to have cut out his basic errors, looks an excellent keeper and is showing why he cost so much in the first place.

Given, quite simply, is one of the best keepers the Premiership has ever seen. In my eyes, Schmeichel will never be bettered, but Given is not far behind him. A fantastic buy for City.

Given, yes. With Spurs I think Harry's quite likely to bring back Pat Jennings.

Pat Jennings, he scored against Manchester United in the 1965 Charity Shield.

Given, Gomes and Cudiccini are excellent shot-stoppers but none commands his area owing to lack of height/size/confidence. This can be a serious problem if the defence is reliant upon a keeper claiming balls within the box.
Hart is a good prospect but has much to learn. He may be loaned out to gain experience should Given block his path to first-team football at City.

I feel GOMES and GIVEN will be first choice for their respective clubs.

More Alex Stepney conceding than Pat Jennings scoring IIRC.

'He was Alex Stepney, the Grandad of the team, he's been playing football, since 1917'

Yes, Stepney wasn't a great goalkeeper, but we all loved his brilliant save from Eusebio in the 1968 European Cup Final.

They better use Given the f**kers.

Shilton or Clemence?

or...

Would England 3rd and 4th choices in the 70s, Phil Parkes (West Ham) and Joe Corrigan (Man City) be first choices for England now despite earning just earning 10 caps between them over their combined total 39 year playing careers.

Phil Parkes was immense wasn't he? West Ham fans who were alive at the time often describe him as the best 'keeper we ever had.

Goalkeepers. Some goodies there, Jennings and Grobbelaar are my faves.

Is no one a fan of the much lamented Scottish goalie? E.g; Alan Rough or Andy Goram.

Andy Goram did give rise to a great chant though, after he was said in the papers to have a mild form of schizophrenia, "Two Andy Gorams, there's only two Andy Gorams..."

I remember when Andy Goram had a brief loan spell at Manchester United in 2001, absolutely apalling goalkeeper. I remember when United played Celtic in Tommy Boyd's testomonial and Alex Ferguson bought Goram on as a sub. The abuse he got from the Celtic fans was quite severe.
Thank God United have now got Van Der Sar after all the messing about with some shocking goalkeepers (Bosnich, Taibi, Barthez, Goram, Howard and Carroll) what a world class goalkeeper Van Der Sar is. If he was a few years younger. That man is a legend.

You must be gutted and I don't blame you. But at least a good chance to reward Steve Harper with some first-team football after all them years loyal service he's given you. Newcastle used to be such an attractive club in the Bobby Robson days, but now it is a sham. Badly ran and a manager who must be on some kind of drugs.
