I nearly switched to a Linux server, but I need a host for testing my existing websites written in .ASP at which Linux is not yet (if ever) very good.

However when it is back up, as well as its windows functions, it will also run TWO Linux servers under Virtualbox.

This is more an electrical question, but hopefully I can get an answer.

So, the insulation around the end of the USB cable on my phone charger has become split. The charger still charges my phone up, but much slower than it used to. I know that it's down to the cable as I tried someone elses cable in my charger and it charged up a lot quicker. Now, if I cover the split part of the cable in electrical tape, will this solve my issue?

I did buy a new USB cable from PCWorld, but it doesn't charge as quickly as my damaged cable used to. I believe this is because it only charges at 0.5a as opposed to 1a which my damaged cable charged at. I can't actually find anywhere online which specifies the cable as being 1a apart from some dodgy looking eBay sellers.

I wouldn't have thought the split would cause this, you've probably got some broken wires in there.

I always just buy a replacement from some market stall holder, does the job for a fiver.

As I say, Sooty, I bought the USB cable from PC World and it charges at a snails pace.

PC World/Currys are the scummiest rip off merchants this side of ever. I really really hate them. They are not by far electrical equipment experts, they are finance people who handle electrical equipment. Please never-ever use these, except for the purpose of browsing and then buying it cheaper elsewhere.

They 'mended' my laptop once, telling me that it was all fine and nothing had been wiped. Got it home, everything was gone.

THANKS PC WORLD.
You bunch of utter lying c**ts.

They don't even handle the repairs, they bring in another company to do that? My Dad bought a laptop from them, the screen broke, they guy in the shop claimed he had 30 days to return for a refund. The 30th day was Christmas Day, my Dad tried to return it the day after Boxing Day, they wouldn't accept it back. Utter-utter scum bags. They sent it off for repair and fixed it about 3 weeks later. Yeah it came back working but not very well and the screen is lose and flimsy still. Twats.

The cable I bought is fine for standard uses e.g. transferring data etc it's as high speed as any other cable. It's just not very good at charging phones as I suspect it only has a 0.5a charging capacity - something I didn't know made a difference until recently.

99p cables are just as good as £7.99 gold-plated branded cables. It's a digital signal, not an analogue one. I'm not saying you bought a gold-plated one but this is the kinda shit PC World tries to pull.

really is it an especially whizzy phone?

My nexus doesn't like charging with anything less than a Blackberry charger

It's a Galaxy S3. A HTC charger also works just fine on mine, but again, I suspect it has the higher capability USB cable. I can get a 1A lead from Carphone Warehouse, but it comes with the charger plug (which I already have and is fine), but it's a tenner. All I want is the damn USB cable.

Yes, I'm sure for data transfer the one I bought from PC World is no different to the cheaper ones. I just happened to be very desperate for a cable that day.

s3 arethat's pretty whizzy

funny my htc1 seems to seem happy sucking on the cheapest of electrical teets

I've just found that RS Components sell the lead that I need and it's only £3.50, but £5.00 postage - ffs!

If it's just a lead surely you can get that from most mooky mobi shops? I just got my new skype headphones from one I'm sure was run by Al Quaeda but they work great and cost a fiver

Just need to find someone to talk to.
