Having had my fill of Norton/Avast/AVG/Kerio problems, 18 months ago I bit the bullet and decided to go it alone, using just Windows Defender and Windows Firewall. Never had any probs since. (Famous last words).

There should be an option called "my outgoing server needs authentication" and you select that & then type in (usually) your email user name and password.
Or elsw you set the outgoing server to be one provided by Apple.

Not yet (upgraded), so dunno.
It's just you read a dozen reviews saying how well the upgrade went and how life has never been better.
Then one that says that their mac froze for 12 hours then burst into flames, killing their children.

Something that's been bugging me for a few days...my Toshiba laptop has a volume dial that has been working without a problem for years, but suddenly it has stopped changing the volume when certain websites or windows are open. If I click on the taskbar it will work, but when the window is in use it just doesn't do anything. Any idea why it would suddenly stop responding like that? It seems to be when I'm on specific websites (like iPlayer) rather than firefox. I've always had this problem when using OpenOffice, but never with other programmes.
I currently have Microsoft Office Word 2003, does anyone know if are there any free newer versions? I'm not having much luck looking but admit I am not very 'up' on it all. Thanks.

Open office isn't Microsoft, but saves and operates the same document types (.doc and .docx etc). It is free open source software.

The newer versions are not free, but the Student/Home edition is priced much lower than the business edition.
Personally I don't think they really add anything significant to Word 2003 and so I'm still using 2003.
One worthwhile addition though is a addon called FileFormatConvertor.exe from the microsoft website. It allows Word 2003 to read all thr new formats generated by Word 2007 and Word 2010.

I am not sure of this, havent tried it yet but I have heard that you can only install apple approved software on Mountain Lion, or software that is downloaded from the apple store

Oracle bought Sun who were the main developers of Open Office & Oracle looked as if they were stalling, so a bunch of former Sun developers took up Open Office and improved it and changed its name to Libre Office. All perfectly legal under the original licencing terms for Open Office.

Exactly the same problem on my old Toshiba Satellite A215-S4757. Started a few days ago after I installed the latest version of VLC media player. Perhaps a coincidence. Could be the computer is just getting old and needs a Windows reinstall. Working fine now, but sometimes becomes useless if a whole bunch of stuff is open. Haven't had time to fiddle to make an accurate diagnosis, or to Google "toshiba satellite volume not working" and wade past the Ubuntu woes to find a fix.
