Hang on, what's wrong with the screen? There maybe a simple, cheaper solution. My Dad's laptop screen stopped working, so he bought a new laptop from Currys for £299, as replacement screens were as bill suggested expensive!. Unfortunately though when I went to visit my Dad, I had a look at the old broken laptop. I noticed that the screen image was still there. It was just very, very dark. Quick Google suggested that the lamp board (whatever the technical name is) had burned out. £15-£20 later after a search on eBay I had replaced the lamp and the laptop was working again. Much to the horror of my Dad!
If the screen has just gone blank, check it by holding it up to the light at different angles. It will be very dimmed!
