I have one of the weirdest computer faults ever.

My computer that I use for graphics & film editing started dying overnight in such a manner that everything powers off except possibly the disk drive (the disk activity light stays on, but the power-on light goes dark). It then won't power off with the "hold the button down for 10 seconds" escape mechanism.

All my efforts to fix it have failed & even made it worse, so that now it won't run in Windows XP at for more than a few minutes, sometimes not at all. I can't even install a fresh copy of Win XP that used to run on this computer, so it can't be software driver problems.

The weird thing is it will run happily on Linux (Mint 12) and it will install Mint 11 to a part of the hard disk. I ran Mint all night showing the Stellarium display (shows the state of the stars & planets).

I've swapped the two RAM strips over, with no change to the symptoms, so I think that eliminates RAM problems.

If you can't help you Bill, no one else can.

Pah, the computer is revolting against Microsoft Windows, methinx.

Words fail you Will?

The old concealed within quote trick.

Interesting problem.

I have no idea how that happened :S

Cheers Kenneth

I don't think I was seeking a cure, just sympathy for this poor old workhorse of a computer (called Flikka) who seems to have got some sort of digital dementia.

Can't decide whether to put her out of her misery or let her graze in retirement midst the Mint of Linux fields, or work her as my Internet browsing Email handling pony until she finally expires. (and then cannibalise her good bits).

My Android phone has problems connecting to wi-fi. However, when I first turn the power on, it's fine, with a full signal which connects easily. After a short while, it becomes harder and harder.
Suggestions?

My computer says I don't have rights to add a printer. How can I break into my own bloody computer?

Mine keeps telling me I have the right to party, but I must fight for it.

It's a Beastie Boys Computer from the 1980s.

Is your Mum jealous?

Naw but I suspect it might be

SABOTAGE!

I feel like I have actually been sabotaged. The 'add printer' section doesn't recognise my IP address, my printer isn't on the options list of absolutely loads, and my Laugh Track entry is in celtx which saves as PDF which I can't do anything with because it's bloody in Russian. How is it that only computers can make me feel this much like I'm about to cry?

If you email it to me I can print it out and bring it tonight.

Can you log in as 'Administrator'? The password is probably blank. Then you should have full rights to everything.

Dan

Thanks Dan

That's some poor security right there.
