British Comedy Guide

The BSG Guide to Comedy

My recent talk of self-publishing and the useful comedy related tips and advice that appear on here makes me wonder if we could compile a BSG "Best of" book.

It could have advice on writing and details on production companies, the best forum entries and poll results, DVD information and other stuff too like classic sketches from Critique.

I'm not saying I'd want the job of doing it but I thought I'd put the idea out there.

I'd buy it and I think there's a good chance it would have a market too. Not sure how we'd split the proceeds though. :P

Bags I not subbing sootyj's sketches.

What we gonna call it?

I can't believe it's not funny.

Not sketches from critique, that would be awful.

But the guide bit is good, plus a section on writing your own sitcoms would be good too but I think the main selling point would be an A-Z of sitcoms.

That's a cool idea. I can see a lot of people wanting that. I'd buy it myself just for a compiled list of good suggestions of shows to watch.
I think the money should just go straight to the site though if anything.

Isn't it already avaliable for free on the Internet, though? And surely the biggest appeal of this website is talking nonsense on the forums? Keep the ideas coming, though. :)

An awful lot of sites have sold books about themselves, people still like books.

And there's some good stuff in critique!

This has been suggested previously in various different forms. TBH, it's a nice thought, but quite unlikely to happen. It's possible we'd put together a slimmed down version of the guides - for example, just broadcast dates rather than episode synopsis, reviews etc - but the site is already so large that it's unlikely (and certainly not at any point in the near future).

Could do with the cash though.

I like the idea of book to keep by the loo to flick through. :)

Even if it was just a selection of classic forum posts and self-published through lulu.com I could design a layout and we could buy it ourselves with all proceeds being donated to site maintenance.

It would a great way to earn additional funds and actually get a record of some of the great things on here. At the end of the day the site is so big those classic posts soon get lost.

Maybe we need 'submit classic post' button. ;)

Gawd. What would be the criteria for something to be 'classic'? :/

Usually with a celebrity edge, such as Pop Bitch. Somehow I don't think reprinting posts from Michael Jacob, Andrew Collins and Ed Morrish has quite the same ring.

Oooooo that would be a fun thread. We did create a list of shows everyone liked. That was a feat! I still can't believe a few shows past!

I reckon every now and then BSG should do a fundraiser - get one of their comedy contacts to autograph a script or something, and then raffle it off amongst everyone who sends in a fiver. I'd love to own an autographed Peep Show script for a fiver.

Great idea.

Mark Lewisohn's "Guide To TV Comedy",

Great book. Right up there on my bookshelf alongside The Psychotronic Film Guide.

I think we'd all enter a raffle to win one of Seefacts School of Comedy scripts. ;)
