Tattoos are pretty tacky. I can just about tolerate a small one, but you have to have an amazing firm body to carry them off. You can't be fat and have a tat. You can't be skinny and have one either.

I agree about the 'good body' bit. It sounds shallow, but body type is important when considering where to locate the tat.
As a heavily tattooed dude, I do get prejudged frequently. I accept that this is partly down to the trampstamp/Cheryl Cole/David Beckham clones who get off the shelf tattoos because they got a double benefits payment by mistake.
I have a Polynesian design I co-created which is based on a traditional tattoo (using traditional technique, the sound made as the hammer hit the needle 'ta-tu') I consider artwork.
I have a design on my neck which is the symbol of the martial art I practice & has very deep personal meaning to me.
Regarding people who think they are tacky etc. Sweeping statements are tacky, as they cloud the waters of discussion with bigotry instead of learning.

Fair point. I don't think all tattoos are tacky, just the ones I see on Jeremy Kyle or big racists and Essex girls. Maoris tattoos aren't tacky, for example.
But I think the "prejudice" argument isn't clear cut because people who have tattoos do it to themselves. It would be like me painting my face blue and glueing a horn to my forehead and then complaining people treat me differently to non-horned non-blue faced people.

No just a sign of gang initiation...
Tatoos are a sign of individuality - my arse!!!!!!!!!!!
Too true, Chappers, they're just a symptom of the herd mentality, aren't they? Much like people who repeat comedy catchphrases.
Sorry to say, if I see somebody with masses of tattoos I tend to assume they're thick.
I think tatoos on your neck really are a sign of a lack of intelligence - and as for the face or head - well........
I'm stopping reading this now until I have it done.
To assume that someone is 'thick' just because they have tattoos is ridiculously judgemental. I'm not having mine for any symbolic reason - arguably 'thick' in istself - but some people do. Some people just like them. It is totally like clothes or hair. We don't all go around bald, or dressed in a uniform. Obviously you're allowed your own opinion, just as everyone is, but reading your comments is making me feel guilty about something I want to do so I'm just going to refrain from checking this thread now.
Yes Scats - but it's there FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can always get your hairstyle changed - and wear different clothes.....but a tatoo is there FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Didn't mean you're thick, Scatters.
Oh, crap. I didn't realise tattoos were permanent. Back to the drawing board about how to express my otherwise completely stunted individuality and creativity.
People DO dress in a uniform - don't start me on denims!

I do hope you were joking.
